More Than What You Eat: How Veganism Shapes Your Life

By: Gloria Stovall

In my previous post, I shared how veganism gradually expanded beyond what was on my plate and into other areas of daily life. When I first began my vegan journey 18 years ago, I had no idea that the biggest transformation would not just be in what I bought or avoided, but in the way it would shape how I live.

At first, veganism felt like a list of changes: different groceries, labels, and products. Over time, it became a change in how I think. I began asking questions like:

  • Where does this come from?
  • Who or what is affected by this choice?
  • Does this align with my values?

Those questions didn’t stay limited to meals. They began shaping my everyday decisions. They began shaping how I think, how I shop, and how I live my daily life.Veganism has made me stop and really consider my choices, even small ones.

For example, I started paying attention to ingredients like palm oil. It is found in so many everyday products, from snacks and baked goods to shampoo, soap, toothpaste, cosmetics, and even cleaning supplies. While palm oil comes from a plant and is technically vegan, the way it is often produced has led to significant rainforest destruction, affecting endangered animals and fragile ecosystems.

Once I realized and understood that, I could not ignore it. Now, whenever possible, I choose products without palm oil, and when it truly cannot be avoided, I look for brands that clearly state their palm oil is sustainably and ethically sourced.

In other words, I think more carefully about what I buy, how it is made, and how it affects the world around me.

Veganism has made me more aware in general. I pause more. I read more. I think more. Instead of just grabbing what is convenient, I try to make choices that reflect compassion and responsibility. Not perfectly, but consistently.

It has also changed how I see my influence in the world. I have realized that being vegan is not just about avoiding certain foods. It is about living in a way that reduces harm and cruelty where possible. It’s about understanding that our everyday decisions, what we buy, and support have a tremendous impact.

That is why veganism is so much more than what you eat.

Thank you so much for following my blog! I truly appreciate all of you and always welcome your thoughts and comments. I will be in touch soon. Have a blessed week!
